Coffee making supplies: Five Essential Items You Cannot Do Without

Before you make learn how to make coffee, you will need certain coffee making supplies in your kitchen! So, have a look around and see if you can find the following items. If you can't find them, then a little coffee supplies (click to search for specific items) shopping trip is recommended!

Measure your coffee

Either

1. a traditional measuring spoon

You will need to measure the coffee accurately at first. Why? You will want to discover how much coffee makes a great cup of coffee. So measure! A typical set of measuring spoons is fine, you will use the tablespoon size.

Or

2. a coffee measuring scoop which is two tablespoons in size.

How you gonna make it?

You will also need a means to make the coffee. In these lessons, we'll focus on

Either

3. A French Press - a kind of glass jug with a plunger that you can steep the coffee grounds in.

4. *A cooking timer - to make sure you don't overcook the coffee.

5. *A cooking or coffee thermometer - if you need to check the water temperature.

Or

6. A filter coffee maker - a drip coffee maker that heats water and drips into the grounds.

7. *A fresh filter paper - to put inside the coffee basket.

8. A notepad and pen - help keep coffee notes on the proportions. Stick the notes on the fridge door!

What you gonna put it in?

9. *A coffee mug or cup - an attractive cup helps the coffee look better, and (dare I say) taste better!

10. *A spoon to stir - obviously, one that is big enough not to fall into the cup!

What ingredients do you need?

11. *A bag or can of freshly ground coffee - what brands can I use?

12. Clean, fresh and unboiled water (it's not worth using bottled water, unless your water is poor quality or hard)

13. *Fresh milk or cream or other flavorings to add before drinking.

14. *Sugar, if you need it.

And a cookie, if you wish! I tend to like something a little sweet for my coffee! It needn't be too big! Mmm!

A decent supermarket will be able to supply most of these coffee making supplies marked with an asterisk, though you won't have a big choice of brands. For specific coffee equipment supplies, a trip to a coffee shop may be necessary if you can't find the right items.

Cream & Creamers

Things you may wish to add to the shopping list: for basic coffee making supplies and ingredients, that's pretty much it. You can also buy brown or crystal sugar to help the taste of the coffee.

For those of you who are lactose intolerant, milk or cream may not be a good choice. There are alternatives: soy milk, rice milk, and even almond milk. It's best to experiment until you get the balance right.

Or you may want to choose a liquid non-dairy creamer. There are now a number of non-dairy creamers on the market, including flavored ones (why hide the coffee flavor?) and healthy alternatives - low-fat, low-sugar, etc.

Personal Note: NEVER add a powdered creamer to your coffee. It's a popular choice for many instant-coffee drinkers, but it affects the taste of the coffee, and can spoil an otherwise excellent cup of coffee.

That's pretty much all you need in the way of coffee making supplies for your coffee shopping list (click to search for specific items). However, you may also find that you need to choose good coffee beans or a better coffee maker, as well. So why not check out those pages (hint: click on the keywords!) while you're at it.

And finally...

Wherever you are, remember "Only Coffee Beans Make Great Coffee"! And enjoy that cup of coffee!
